The restricted area is the Aurukun Shire and incorporates the Watson River, Archer River, Kendall River and upper reaches of the Hey River. The restricted area includes all public and private places.

As the Holroyd River is the boundary between Aurukun and Pormpuraaw, the waterway is not restricted. However, the northern and southern sides of the river are included in the Aurukun alcohol restrictions.

Dry places

People living in Aurukun may apply to have their home declared a 'dry place'.

Alcohol restrictions

No alcohol is allowed in Aurukun Shire, including home-brewed alcohol and home-brew equipment.

Penalties

Maximum penalties for possessing alcohol in Aurukun:

  • first offence $37,500
  • second offence $52,500 and/or 6 months imprisonment
  • third offence $75,000 and/or 18 Months imprisonment

Vehicles found carrying alcohol in the restricted area may be confiscated.

It is also an offence to attempt to bring alcohol into the restricted area. The maximum penalty is $37,500.

A maximum penalty of $19,000 will apply to offenders who:

  • possess a home-brew kit or a component of a home-brew kit
  • possess equipment or a component of equipment that is being used or has been used to brew alcohol
  • possess home-brew concentrate
  • supply homemade alcohol to another person in Aurukun

These penalties apply to all people living in, travelling through, visiting or working in the restricted area.
