Spinifex State College

Spinifex State College is a state-run boarding school providing access to quality education for students from rural and remote areas.

Read how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are succeeding at Spinifex State College.

A Year 12 education opens up more opportunities for employment and further study. It's vital that Indigenous students have the same opportunities to successfully complete Year 12 as non-Indigenous students.

The Queensland Government is taking action to address the gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students:

  • in reading, writing and numeracy achievements
  • in year 12 attainment or equivalent
  • in achieving further trade, training and tertiary qualifications

Targets, strategies and progress measures

The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) and the Queensland Government have set targets to improve the education and training prospects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Council of Australian Governments (COAG) targets

  • halve the gap in reading, writing and numeracy achievements for Indigenous children within a decade
  • halve the gap for Indigenous students in year 12 attainment or equivalent attainment rates by 2020

Q2 (Tomorrow's Queensland) targets

  • 3 out of 4 Queenslanders will hold trade, training or tertiary qualifications

Progress measures

  • Year 3, 5 and 7 reading, writing and numeracy
  • Year 12 or equivalent certification

Strategic directions

The Queensland Government's actions and projects will support the following strategies:

  • develop responses for improved reading, writing and numeracy outcomes for all ages
  • increase young people's engagement with school or other learning pathways
  • ensure curriculum is relevant and flexible
  • improve teacher and school leader quality and support, particularly for remote Queensland schools
