Housing improvement program

Overcrowding and housing maintenance problems in Kowanyama have improved under schemes funded by the Queensland and Australian Governments.

Read about housing improvements in Kowanyama.

The Queensland Government's priorities in improving the home environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are to:

  • address the problem of overcrowding in Indigenous households
  • provide environmental infrastructure and other essential services

Achieving positive outcomes in these areas will support the successful achievement of other targets, including health.

Targets, strategies and progress measures

There are no Council of Australian Governments (COAG) or Tomorrow's Queensland Q2 targets that directly address this strategic action area.

However, improvements in home environment may have long-term impacts on a number of the COAG targets. For example, reductions in overcrowding in housing and enhancements in environmental health may result in better health outcomes.

Progress measures

  • overcrowding in housing

Strategic directions

The Queensland Government's actions and projects will support the following strategies:

  • reduce overcrowding and improve use of social housing
  • bring Indigenous housing into a strong tenancy management system
  • ensure all Indigenous people have access to housing and related infrastructure that meets regulatory standards
  • increase opportunities for Indigenous home ownership
