Wages and savings claims scheme (reparations)

From the 1890s until the 1970s, many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders living in Queensland were subject to restrictive legislation that controlled their wages and savings. In 2002, the Queensland Government made an offer to pay reparations payments to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders whose wages and savings were affected by the Queensland Government Protection Acts. This was the first round of the ‘reparations scheme’.

In March 2008, the government announced second round payments of $3000 to people who previously received a $4000 reparations payment and $1500 to those who received a $2000 reparations payment.

On 12 August 2008 the Queensland Government reopened the reparations process to people who did not apply in round 1 but who would have been eligible, and for claimants who submitted their application too late. Applicants assessed as eligible but who did not accept their payment were also able to reapply.

The final round of the wages and savings claims scheme closed on 30 April 2009. Claims are being processed as quickly as possible. For more information, call 1800 809 097.
