Dirranbandi is in the Balonne Shire and is about a 1-hour drive from the nearest major town of St George. Historically, the district surrounding the town of Dirranbandi has been described as being some of the finest wool grazing country in Australia.
The town site was surveyed in 1885. It was named Dirranbandi, which is an Aboriginal term from the Kamilaroi language meaning 'chorus of frogs in the swamp'.
Dirranbandi is the gateway to the Culgoa Flood Plains National Park.
Today, Dirranbandi's population almost doubles at cotton harvest time when workers flock into town to pick the crop. Dirranbandi is also home to 'Cubbie Station', which is believed to be the largest privately owned cotton property in the southern hemisphere.
