About St George

St George was named by Sir Thomas Mitchell, who came across the river crossing on St George's Day (April 23), 1846. There is a monument to Mitchell in the landscaped gardens next to the Jack Taylor Weir. St George officially became a town in 1862 and was incorporated as a municipality in 1902.

The town sits on the banks of the Balonne River, on the Moonie Highway. Beardmore Dam is located just outside of St George and provides water for irrigation and the town.

St George is the business centre for a large primary producing district. Major rural products include cotton, grain, sheep, beef cattle, table grapes and other horticultural crops.

The current active native title claims covering the Balonne Shire are:

  • Kooma People No. 3
  • Gunagarri People No. 2
  • Bigambul People
