Spinifex State College Mount Isa

Spinifex State College in Mount Isa is Queensland's first state-run boarding school.

The college gives students from rural and remote areas, who otherwise wouldn't attend school through to senior level, the opportunity to finish Year 12.

In February 2008 Spinifex State College had 1064 students enrolled, with 693 students in the Junior campus (33% Indigenous) and 371 in the Senior campus (28.3% Indigenous).

Forty students from 11 communities board at the school, and 66% of students are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Student success

The residential campus supports students to give them the best chance of success. And the program is working.

In 2007 Spinifex College had:

  • 100% school attendance
  • 100% student participation in daily afternoon activities and study sessions
  • 100% attendance in life-skills programs
  • 85% pass rate

And in 2007, all Indigenous Year 12 students, (5 boys and 2 girls) successfully completed Year 12.
